CATS FALL OUT OF WINDOWS. The idea that cats can safely walk around on narrow ledges high up on tall buildings is a myth. Any vet will tell you the most common injuries to city-dwelling cats are fall related. If you live higher than ground level, make sure all your windows have screens.

NEVER USE SCISSORS ON A CAT TO CLIP MATTED FUR. One little cut in their skin will open up a 3 inch slice and require stitches. Leave matted fur to the professionals or you risk serious harm to your feline. If you are reading this and have already made the mistake, get your cat to the vet or emergency clinic at once, even if there is no blood!

DOGS CUT THEIR PAWS ON GLASS in parks, on sidewalks and in gutters. Develop the habit of looking at the ground ahead of your dog to spot hazards in time to be sure your animal avoids them.

PUPPIES NEED THEIR COLLARS CHANGED several times while they're growing up. Vets say you wouldn't believe how often they have to perform surgery to remove ingrown collars. Whenever you're cuddling your pup, slip your fingers under his or her collar to be sure it still fits and with a little room to spare.

CHOCOLATE CAN BE POISONOUS TO YOUR DOG OR CAT, even when ingested in small amounts, and your pet can still smell chocolate even if it's hidden in wrappers or packaging. Tuck packaged treats away so your curious pet can't tear into them when left unsupervised. If you notice any signs of chocolate ingestion — hyperactivity, vomiting, excessive urination, rapid breathing, or the chewed remains of chocolate treats — call your veterinarian immediately.

NEVER GIVE YOUR PET ANY MEDICATION YOU TAKE without specific orders from your vet. While some 'people medicines' are used to treat ailments in dogs and cats, others are very harmful. Over the counter items can be just as dangerous as prescribed drugs. Always phone your vet and ask BEFORE you give your animal any medicine.

ALWAYS KEEP POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS AWAY FROM PETS. Common household items that are highly toxic to animals even in low quantities include fabric softener sheets, mothballs, potpourri oils and pre-1983 pennies (due to high concentration of zinc). Be sure to store all automotive products - oil, gasoline, windshield washer fuilid, antifreeze, etc. - on high shelves away from pet access areas. Dog and cats find car coolants or antifreeze sweet tasting but it's a killer. Never allow your animal to lick an area where cars are parked. Always keep coolant containers closed and in a secure place away from pets. This also goes for drain pans if you are in the process of draining a coolant system. It only takes a second with your back turned for things to turn deadly.

A RECENTLY DEVELOPED PRODUCT is being hailed as being much more safer than the type of antifreeze which has killed untold numbers of animals and children. SIERRA Antifreeze-Coolant is a premium quality propylene glycol (PG) based coolant which provides engine protection comparable to that provided by premium brand conventional ethylene glycol (EG) based coolants. But, because of its propylene glycol formulation, SIERRA Antifreeze is less toxic and safer than ethylene glycol coolants to children, pets, and wildlife in case of spills, leaks, boilovers, or careless disposal.

There is no question this revolutionary product saves lives. For more information, visit the SIERRA website by clicking "more info" above.
